Ukraine Reports Russian Airstrikes on Energy Facilities and Infrastructure

ISTANBUL —
Ukraine reported on Saturday that Russian airstrikes targeted energy facilities and infrastructure in a “massive” attack, causing emergency power outages across the country.

Targets and Impact

Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said in a Telegram statement that Russian strikes hit power substations and key 750 kV and 330 kV overhead lines, which form the backbone of Ukraine’s electricity grid. The attacks also struck the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants in western Ukraine.

Shmyhal added that staff at the country’s nuclear power plant units adjusted output to stabilize the grid amid the strikes.

Emergency Measures

The minister reported that 4.5–5 emergency outage schedules have been implemented nationwide, with special measures in eastern and northern regions. Energy workers are prepared to begin restoration as soon as the security situation allows.

Ukrenergo, the national grid operator, requested emergency support from neighboring Poland, while private energy provider DTEK reported “significant” damage to its thermal power stations across multiple regions.

Russian Response

Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attacks.
