UN Appoints Spain’s Pedro Sánchez to SDG Leadership Role

UN Chief Selects Spanish PM to Co-Lead SDG Initiative

NEW YORK — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as the new co-chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group (SDG Advocates), reinforcing international efforts to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The appointment, announced on Wednesday by the UN spokesperson’s office, will see Sánchez serve alongside Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who will continue in her existing role as co-chair.

In the announcement, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for stronger global action to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting Sánchez’s commitment to sustainable development and multilateral cooperation.

The SDG Advocates are a group of prominent international leaders who work with the UN secretary-general to promote awareness, mobilize political support and encourage practical action to achieve the organization’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Guterres also thanked former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who previously served as co-chair, for his contributions to advancing the global sustainable development agenda.

The appointment comes at a time when the United Nations is calling for renewed international cooperation to address challenges such as climate change, poverty, inequality and sustainable economic growth
