The United Nations on Tuesday criticized Israeli airstrikes targeting Syria, calling the attacks a serious violation of Syria’s territorial sovereignty and airspace.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization was aware of the strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib province and urged that such attacks be halted. He emphasized that the UN opposed actions that undermine Syria’s territorial integrity.
Dujarric also expressed deep concern about the worsening security and humanitarian conditions in the occupied West Bank. He said Israeli forces had ordered 10 Palestinian families in the Jabal Al Nasr area of Tulkarm to temporarily leave their homes during military operations near the Nur Shams refugee camp.
According to Dujarric, Israeli military bulldozers also damaged water and sewage infrastructure while carrying out road excavation and work on Palestinian land. The displaced families were able to return after Israeli forces left the area, while municipal workers repaired the damaged networks.
In Gaza, Dujarric said humanitarian requirements remained extremely serious. Despite the difficult circumstances, UN agencies and humanitarian partners continued delivering assistance and carrying out essential operations whenever possible.
He referred to a UN assessment indicating that only around 3 percent of Gaza’s agricultural land remains both accessible and undamaged. He also voiced concern over continuing Israeli airstrikes, artillery fire, gunfire and naval attacks affecting civilians, particularly in areas west of the so-called yellow line, where the majority of Gaza’s population is located.
