UN Rapporteur Criticizes US and Israel Over Iran Strikes
A United Nations special rapporteur has sharply criticized the United States and Israel following their military strikes on Iran, accusing both countries of undermining global peace and stability.
Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, expressed his concerns on Saturday as tensions across the Middle East continued to rise.
Strong Condemnation on Social Media
In a post on the social media platform X, Rajagopal said he strongly condemned the attack on Iran by the United States and Israel.
He also criticized countries that, in his view, either support the strikes or remain silent. According to Rajagopal, such actions and responses risk severe consequences for civilians.
Furthermore, he warned that innocent people would lose their lives and many homes would be destroyed because of the military operation. He described the situation as a serious blow to international peace and order.
Background to the Escalation
Earlier Saturday, Israel and the United States launched a joint military operation against Iran, citing threats from what they described as the Iranian regime.
The strikes followed the latest round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks held in Geneva, where both sides had characterized discussions as serious and constructive under Omani mediation.
Additionally, last June, the United States targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities during a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
As the situation develops, international officials continue to voice concerns over the growing risk of wider regional instability.
