US-Denmark Deepen Defense Ties, Reaffirm Support for Ukraine

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III met with Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen at the Pentagon on October 16, 2024, to discuss strengthening bilateral defense relations and continuing military assistance to Ukraine. The meeting highlighted the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Denmark, particularly in the context of collective security efforts and NATO cooperation.

During the meeting, Secretary Austin expressed gratitude for Denmark’s significant contributions to Ukraine’s defense capabilities and military industry. Denmark has played a crucial role in supporting Ukraine, both bilaterally and through multilateral forums such as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, as the war against Russian aggression continues. The leaders exchanged views on the upcoming NATO Defense Ministerial Meeting and emphasized the importance of maintaining robust support for Ukraine’s defense, ensuring the country’s ability to resist Russian advances.

In addition to their discussion on Ukraine, Secretary Austin and Minister Poulsen explored opportunities to deepen defense cooperation between the U.S. and Denmark. This comes in the wake of the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2023, which has laid the foundation for enhanced collaboration in areas such as joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and technology development.

Secretary Austin congratulated Minister Poulsen on Denmark’s historic increase in defense spending, noting the country’s commitment to exceeding the NATO target of two percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) allocated to defense this year. Denmark’s decision to bolster its military capabilities comes amid rising global security challenges, and it reflects the nation’s dedication to contributing to NATO’s collective defense initiatives.

The Pentagon meeting underscored the strong and growing defense partnership between the U.S. and Denmark, as both nations work together to confront shared challenges and enhance their security cooperation. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and shifting security dynamics in Europe, the collaboration between these two allies remains essential to ensuring stability and peace in the region.–News Desk
