US Vice President JD Vance Arrives in Switzerland for Key Talks with Iran
US Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Switzerland for high-level technical negotiations with Iranian officials aimed at reinforcing a recently reached ceasefire agreement and addressing broader regional security concerns.
Vance landed at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne early Sunday ahead of talks scheduled to take place in Burgenstock. The negotiations are being held under the framework of the Islamabad Agreement, a Pakistan-mediated accord that helped end months of conflict in the Middle East and paved the way for renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking before his departure from Washington, Vance said he expected the discussions to continue for several days and expressed optimism about achieving progress on key issues. He identified Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing situation in Lebanon as the primary topics on the agenda.
The vice president noted that senior US representatives, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, had already arrived in Switzerland to work on the technical foundations of the negotiations. He also voiced confidence that both countries could maintain the current ceasefire and continue moving toward a more stable relationship.
Vance acknowledged that Iran would likely bring its own priorities to the talks but emphasized the importance of establishing a productive framework for future negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Zurich ahead of the formal meetings. The Iranian team is expected to focus on issues related to sanctions, regional security, and implementation of commitments outlined in the agreement.
Pakistan, which played a central mediating role in securing the accord, is also participating in the discussions. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are attending alongside a senior delegation to support ongoing diplomatic efforts.
International observers view the Switzerland talks as a significant opportunity to strengthen the ceasefire, address regional flashpoints, and establish a roadmap for future cooperation between the United States and Iran.
