US, Philippines Reaffirm Defense Alliance in Key Meeting

In a pivotal meeting underscoring the longstanding U.S.-Philippine defense relationship, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Philippine Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro reinforced their countries’ mutual commitment to regional security and cooperation. The discussions, highlighted by Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Ms. Sabrina Singh, took place amidst a backdrop of increasing strategic collaboration between the two nations.

The dialogue followed the 2024 U.S.-Philippines 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, marking significant progress in defense cooperation. Key outcomes included agreements on Foreign Military Financing for the Philippines and a comprehensive Security Sector Assistance Roadmap. These initiatives aim to bolster the defense capabilities of the Philippines and enhance joint efforts to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Secretary Austin reiterated U.S. support for the Philippines in safeguarding its sovereign rights. Both officials stressed the critical importance of maintaining the rights of all nations to operate freely in international waters and airspace, in accordance with international law. The meeting underscored the shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, with a focus on strengthening information-sharing, enhancing the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ capabilities, and advancing U.S. rotational force posture through the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.
