China Opens Landmark Double-Deck Bridge Over Yangtze River
ANHUI, CHINA: China has opened its first double-deck cable-stayed suspension bridge, the Tongling Yangtze River Third Bridge, in Anhui Province’s Tongling City. The project marks a new milestone in the country’s growing transport infrastructure.
A Milestone in Transport Connectivity
Spanning 4.13 kilometres, the bridge features a 1,700-metre main span and serves as the 11th crossing over the Yangtze River in Anhui. The upper deck includes six high-speed lanes with a design speed of 80 kilometres per hour, along with two pedestrian walkways. Meanwhile, the lower deck provides six slower lanes, two cycleways, and two sidewalks, ensuring smooth and safe movement for all commuters.
Boosting Regional Development
Moreover, the bridge integrates expressways, intercity railways, and freight lines, enabling efficient intermodal transport between rail and water routes. Currently, an 11.9-kilometre section is open to road traffic. Officials said the bridge will significantly ease congestion and stimulate economic growth throughout the Yangtze River Delta region.
Commitment to Sustainability
In addition, the bridge has been built with strict environmental standards. It passes through the Tongling River Dolphin National Nature Reserve and a protected drinking water zone. According to officials, its design minimizes ecological disruption while promoting sustainable urban development across eastern China.
