WHO Halts Gaza Medical Evacuations After Worker Death
Evacuations suspended following security incident
The World Health Organization has suspended medical evacuations from Gaza Strip after a contracted worker was killed during a security incident.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the development and expressed deep concern over the situation. He stated that two staff members present at the scene remained unharmed.
Patient transfers paused until further notice
Following the incident, the agency immediately halted patient evacuations through Rafah Crossing into Egypt.
Officials announced that evacuations will remain suspended until authorities complete their investigation and ensure safety conditions improve.
UN calls for protection of civilians
Meanwhile, the United Nations has launched an investigation into the incident. Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric urged all parties to protect civilians and humanitarian workers.
He also warned against rhetoric that could justify collective punishment, stressing the importance of safeguarding human life.
Rising attacks on healthcare facilities
Since early March, WHO has recorded around 100 attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza. These incidents have resulted in at least 54 deaths and 145 injuries among healthcare workers.
Such attacks place frontline workers at serious risk. Moreover, they discourage civilians from seeking medical care, which can lead to severe public health consequences.
Humanitarian concerns intensify
As violence continues, humanitarian conditions in Gaza are worsening. Health services remain under pressure, while safety concerns disrupt critical medical support.
Authorities now face growing urgency to restore safe evacuation routes and protect healthcare systems in the region.
