Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Loses Main Power Line, Says UN Agency
MOSCOW — March 24, 2026
The UN nuclear watchdog has confirmed that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has lost its primary external power connection, raising fresh concerns about safety at the site.
Power Supply Disrupted
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the plant lost access to the 750 kV Dniprovska power line. As a result, the facility now relies on a single backup line for its electricity needs.
The agency stated that its team continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the plant remains stable.
Talks on Local Ceasefire
Meanwhile, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has initiated discussions with both Russia and Ukraine. The talks aim to establish a temporary local ceasefire that would allow repair teams to restore the damaged power line.
Officials believe that restoring a stable power supply is critical for maintaining nuclear safety standards at the facility.
Ongoing Safety Concerns
The Zaporizhzhia plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, has remained under Russian control since March 2022. Although all six reactors are currently in cold shutdown, the plant still requires a reliable power source to maintain essential safety systems.
At the same time, both Russia and Ukraine continue to accuse each other of carrying out attacks on infrastructure near the site, increasing the risk of further disruptions.
