Coalition Plans Advance to Protect Key Global Oil Route

UK Prepares Naval Role in Effort to Secure Strait of Hormuz

UK Plans Leading Role in Efforts to Secure Strait of Hormuz

BRUSSELS — March 24, 2026

The United Kingdom is preparing to take a central role in potential international efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report published Tuesday.

Plans for Naval Deployment

According to The Times, UK defense officials are reviewing plans to deploy a Royal Navy vessel or a leased commercial ship. This vessel would act as a “mothership” to support advanced autonomous systems designed to locate and neutralize naval mines.

These systems would allow forces to operate more safely while maintaining control over key maritime routes.

Multinational Coordination

The proposed operation would form part of a wider coalition effort involving allies such as the United States and France. Together, these countries aim to ensure the safe movement of commercial ships through the strait, a vital global trade route.

Officials stated that coordination among partners will be essential to maintain stability in the region.

Phased Military Strategy

The operation is expected to proceed in stages. Initially, forces would focus on mine detection using uncrewed systems launched from the mothership.

In the next phase, the UK could deploy uncrewed surface vessels alongside Royal Navy Type 45 destroyers. Alternatively, the destroyers alone could provide security for oil tankers passing through the area.

A defense official highlighted the UK’s advanced capabilities in autonomous mine-hunting and naval defense. He also emphasized the importance of reducing risks to personnel through the use of modern, unmanned technology.

Ongoing Risks in the Strait

Officials believe that naval mines may have been placed in the waterway. However, they noted that a navigable route remains open, as ships from countries such as India, Pakistan, and China continue to pass through the strait.

Rising Regional Tensions

Meanwhile, tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate. Since February 28, a joint US-Israeli military campaign in Iran has resulted in more than 1,340 deaths, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has launched repeated drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf states hosting US military assets.

Impact on Global Energy Markets

The Strait of Hormuz has faced significant disruption since early March. The waterway typically carries around 20 million barrels of oil each day.

As a result, reduced access has increased shipping costs and driven global oil prices higher, raising concerns about energy security worldwide.
