Indonesia Volcano Erupts, Sends Ash 10 Kilometers Into Sky

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a volcano in eastern Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, releasing a massive ash plume into the atmosphere and prompting officials to raise the alert level to its highest tier.
The eruption occurred at 5:35 p.m. local time (0935 GMT) on the island of Flores, a popular tourist destination. Indonesia’s volcanology agency reported that the ash column reached approximately 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) above the summit. The plume was described as thick and grey, indicating high intensity.
Authorities upgraded the volcano’s alert status to Level 4 — the highest on Indonesia’s four-tier warning scale — in response to increased volcanic activity.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Indonesia’s Geological Agency chief Muhammad Wafid advised residents and tourists to avoid any activities within at least a 7-kilometer radius of the volcano’s crater, citing safety concerns.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is one of many active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” — a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
