The Pentagon confirmed a major US Iraq transition, announcing a planned reduction of the US military mission in Iraq. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said the decision follows presidential guidance and aligns with the US Iraq Higher Military Commission and the joint statement of Sept. 27, 2024.

Pentagon officials highlighted that the transition reflects the joint success of US and Coalition forces in defeating ISIS while preparing for a lasting US Iraq security partnership. The adjustment supports US national interests, Iraq’s Constitution, and the US Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement.

The new framework aims to boost Iraq’s security and stability, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Iraq’s economic development and regional leadership role.

The Pentagon stressed that the US Government will continue close coordination with Iraq and Coalition partners to ensure a responsible and sustainable transition that safeguards progress made in the fight against terrorism.
