US Prepares for Severe Winter Storm Affecting Over 200 Million People
Dangerous Storm Set to Sweep Across the Nation
The United States is preparing for a powerful winter storm expected to affect more than 200 million people beginning Friday. Forecasts warn of heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and extremely cold temperatures across large parts of the country.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm will move east from the High Plains and the Rocky Mountains, creating what officials describe as “extremely dangerous” conditions. As the system advances, it is likely to disrupt daily life and strain emergency services.
Arctic Blast Raises Health Concerns
According to the NWS, the storm will bring Arctic air, pushing temperatures below zero in several regions. Strong winds will worsen conditions, creating severe wind chills that increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, especially for those exposed to the cold for long periods.
Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor activity and take precautions to stay warm, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the homeless.
Travel Disruptions Expected Nationwide
Meanwhile, transportation officials have warned of major travel problems over the weekend. Airport authorities in several large cities expect flight delays and cancellations as snow and ice affect runways and visibility.
Road conditions are also likely to deteriorate, increasing the risk of accidents and slowing emergency response times.
Forecast Path and Snowfall Areas
The storm is expected to move slowly across the country, spreading snow across major cities including Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.
In addition, forecasters predict heavy snowfall from the Southern Rockies and Plains through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Data from the NWS Probabilistic Precipitation Portal shows that areas from Colorado through West Virginia and up to Boston could receive more than a foot of snow.
