Call for Federal Control Ahead of Midterms
President Donald Trump has urged Republicans to take greater federal control over future elections, calling on the party to “nationalize the voting” as his administration moves to reshape election rules ahead of this year’s crucial midterm contests.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with Dan Bongino, a former FBI deputy director, on a podcast that aired Monday.
“The Republicans should say, we want to take over,” Trump said. “We should take over the voting in at least many, 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”
Comments Follow FBI Search in Georgia
Trump’s statements came less than a week after FBI agents searched an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, a jurisdiction that has featured prominently in his repeated claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.
According to earlier reporting by CNN, the search formed part of a Justice Department effort to obtain election records as officials investigated allegations of voter fraud in the county.
Renewed Claims of Election Irregularities
During the interview, Trump again questioned the accuracy of state-run vote counts, despite courts and election officials rejecting such claims in the past.
“We have states that are so crooked and they’re counting votes,” Trump said. He added that some states he claimed to have won showed different results.
Trump also suggested that developments in Georgia could soon emerge following court-approved access to ballots, though he provided no evidence to support his claims.
Broader Push on Election Rules
The president’s remarks reflect a broader effort by his administration to challenge existing election systems and push for changes at the national level. These moves come as Republicans and Democrats prepare for tightly contested midterm elections later this year.
