NATO Honors Türkiye Earthquake Victims, Reaffirms Support Ahead of Summit
ISTANBUL —
NATO commemorated the victims of Türkiye’s devastating earthquakes on Friday and reaffirmed its support for the country ahead of the upcoming alliance summit in Ankara.
Three-Year Anniversary of the Tragedy
On February 6, 2023, two powerful earthquakes struck the southern province of Kahramanmaras, affecting 11 provinces in southern Türkiye. The disaster caused tens of thousands of deaths and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
NATO’s Statement and Support
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said: “As we look forward to our NATO Summit in Ankara, we remember the devastating earthquakes that struck 3 years ago, causing so much suffering.” She highlighted NATO’s aid at the time, including strategic airlifts and shelter for thousands of displaced people.
Hart added, “NATO stood with Türkiye then … and we stand with you now,” emphasizing continued solidarity.
Upcoming NATO Summit
Türkiye will host the 2026 NATO Summit on July 7–8 in Ankara, where alliance leaders are expected to address security and cooperation issues.
