Canada secured a place in the playoffs at the World Women’s Curling Championship, even after suffering a narrow defeat to Norway on Thursday evening.
Led by Kerri Einarson, the Manitoba-based team lost 10–6 in an extra end. However, results from other matches ensured their progression to the next stage.
Favorable Results Confirm Qualification
Canada’s qualification depended on losses by China or Turkey. As both teams were defeated in the same session, Canada secured its playoff berth.
At this stage, Switzerland leads the standings at 9–1, while Canada and Japan follow at 8–2. Sweden remains close behind at 8–3, with two playoff spots still undecided.
Focus Shifts to Semifinal Qualification
Einarson acknowledged the achievement but emphasized that the team must stay focused. She noted that while reaching the playoffs is important, the team aims to secure a direct semifinal position.
The top two teams in the standings will advance directly to the semifinals, while the remaining four teams will compete in qualification matches earlier on Saturday.
Upcoming Matches Crucial
Canada will complete its pool-stage matches on Friday against Australia and Japan. Strong performances in these games could help the team earn a direct entry into the semifinals.
Earlier in the day, Canada recorded an 8–3 win over South Korea, boosting confidence ahead of the decisive fixtures.
Norway Delivers Strong Challenge
Despite being out of playoff contention, Norway delivered a determined performance. Skip Torild Bjoernstad said her team played with freedom and confidence.
A key moment came when Norway executed a precise shot to take a 3–1 lead after four ends, setting the tone for the match.
