US Expands Military Presence in Middle East Amid Rising Tensions
Deployment of Additional Forces
The United States is increasing its military presence in the Middle East by deploying around 8,000 additional service members, according to a report citing anonymous officials.
This move aims to strengthen operations as tensions with Iran continue to rise.
Amphibious Groups Sent Ahead of Schedule
Officials stated that the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit have accelerated their deployment from the US West Coast. To speed up the process, sailors and Marines cut short their leave and prepared for early departure.
The USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group includes the USS Boxer, USS Portland, and USS Comstock. Together, these vessels carry about 2,500 Marines.
Total Force Strength Nears 8,000
With the addition of sailors and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the total number of personnel aboard the Boxer group reaches approximately 4,000.
Once these forces join the USS Tripoli group, which is already heading to the region, the combined deployment will include six amphibious ships and nearly 8,000 service members.
No Immediate Official Comment
The Pentagon directed media inquiries to US Central Command. However, CENTCOM has not yet issued an official response.
Context of Regional Escalation
The deployment comes as regional tensions continue to escalate following joint military actions by the US and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28. Reports indicate that around 1,300 people have died, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting US military bases. These attacks have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted global markets and aviation.
