Dmitry Peskov said joint military drills involving Russia and Belarus were designed to send a clear strategic message as regional tensions continue to rise.
Speaking in Moscow, Peskov described military exercises as an important element of defense development and emphasized that such operations always carry political and military significance. The exercises, taking place this week, reportedly included training scenarios linked to the delivery and possible combat use of nuclear munitions.
The comments came as the Kremlin highlighted the importance of President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to China, which Peskov described as highly productive and strategically meaningful.
According to the Kremlin spokesman, Russia and China achieved progress in negotiations surrounding the major Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline initiative. While significant understanding has reportedly been reached on several key aspects of the project, Peskov noted that both sides still need to resolve remaining details before a final agreement can be signed.
Peskov also confirmed that Putin discussed the Ukraine conflict with Xi Jinping during talks in Beijing. He said China continues to express readiness to support efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement between Russia and Ukraine.
The Kremlin spokesman additionally rejected Western media claims alleging that Russian soldiers had undergone military training in China.
Addressing Ukraine’s recent strikes targeting Russian energy facilities, Peskov insisted there was no threat of fuel shortages inside Russia despite the attacks.
He also welcomed comments from some European leaders suggesting future dialogue with Moscow may eventually become necessary. Peskov stressed that Russia remains open to communication, arguing that diplomatic engagement is preferable to prolonged confrontation, although he added that no formal negotiation proposals have yet emerged from Europe.
