Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday urged the expanded BRICS group and its partner nations to ensure that industrial and supply chains remain stable and uninterrupted amid disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz caused by the US-Iran conflict.
Addressing the final day of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Xi said the expanded bloc should strengthen the foundations for practical cooperation. He described the Global South as an increasingly important force behind the shift toward a multipolar world and called for stronger commitment to multilateralism.
Xi stressed the importance of protecting the authority and role of the United Nations while supporting reforms aimed at making international institutions more effective. He also advocated changes to the global financial system to give developing nations greater representation and influence, alongside WTO reforms.
The Chinese leader further encouraged BRICS countries to modernise traditional industries, expand emerging sectors and prepare for future industries. He proposed closer integration of markets and cooperation in science and technology, smart manufacturing, digital industries, trade, investment and artificial intelligence.
