US Special Envoy for Iraq and Syria Tom Barrack and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi held talks focused on Iraq’s efforts to place all weapons under the authority of the state and strengthen national sovereignty.
According to a joint statement issued following their meeting in Baghdad, both officials discussed measures aimed at creating a more secure and stable future for Iraq. Key topics included plans to disarm and dissolve armed groups operating outside government control, centralize all weapons under state institutions, and prevent the country from being drawn into wider regional conflicts.
The statement emphasized the urgency of completing these security reforms, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing Iraq’s stability and independence.
Beyond security matters, the discussions also highlighted expanding economic cooperation and investment opportunities. Officials welcomed progress on several initiatives, including a license for Starlink services, negotiations involving Chevron on major oil projects, the return of American energy companies under enhanced security arrangements, and plans to revive the Kirkuk–Baniyas pipeline with support from TI Capital.
The two sides also reviewed cooperation in the energy sector, including a proposed liquefied natural gas import terminal at Khor Zubair to help meet Iraq’s growing energy demands.
Both officials reiterated support for a strong, sovereign, and democratic Iraq built on constitutional institutions and equal rights for all citizens. The statement further noted that President Donald Trump is expected to host Prime Minister Al-Zaidi at the White House in mid-July to discuss the future of bilateral relations.
