Targeted Shooting Claims Russian Dissident Artist Life

Poland Investigation Intensifies Following Kremlin Critic Death

A Russian artist and political cartoonist known for criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin was fatally shot in eastern Poland in what local media have described as a possible targeted killing.

The victim, identified as Semyon Skrepetsky, was a 44-year-old Russian national residing in Biała Podlaska, a city near the Belarusian border. Authorities reported that he was shot on a street near the city center on Monday morning and later died from his injuries.

According to police, the attacker or attackers fled the scene. Reports from some Polish media outlets suggested that a Belarusian citizen was detained shortly after the incident, although officials have not confirmed any arrest.

Polish police and prosecutors have launched an investigation and are examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive, though officials indicated that the nature of the attack points toward a deliberate and targeted act.

Skrepetsky was known for producing satirical artwork aimed at Putin, Ramzan Kadyrov, and other figures associated with the Russian government. He reportedly left Russia in 2021 due to concerns about political persecution.

Just days before his death, the artist participated in a protest outside the Russian embassy in Berlin, displaying artwork critical of Russian leadership. The incident has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions between Poland, Russia, and Belarus, with Polish authorities continuing to monitor security threats and alleged intelligence activities across the region.

The case has also prompted comparisons with previous attacks on Russian dissidents, journalists, and Kremlin critics living abroad, including the killing of Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.
