Hundreds Celebrate Canada Day in Whitehorse with Parade, Music and Family Activities
Whitehorse came alive with patriotic spirit on Canada Day as hundreds of residents and visitors gathered across the city’s downtown and Shipyards Park to celebrate Canada’s 159th anniversary with a full day of community events, entertainment and family-friendly activities.
The festivities began early with a popular community pancake breakfast, bringing families and neighbours together to start the national holiday. One of the day’s most meaningful moments followed at the local legion, where more than a dozen newcomers proudly took the oath of citizenship, officially becoming Canadian citizens during a special ceremony.
By late morning, crowds lined the streets of downtown Whitehorse for the annual Canada Day parade, cheering as colourful floats, community groups and local organizations made their way through the city. Participants decorated vehicles and displays with Canada’s signature red-and-white colours, waving flags and greeting spectators along the parade route.
Leading the procession was a ceremonial colour party featuring members of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Canadian Armed Forces, local air and army cadets, and RCMP officers dressed in their iconic red serge uniforms, adding a strong sense of tradition and national pride to the celebration.
Following the parade, festivities shifted to Shipyards Park, where the official ceremony began with a flag-raising event and the ceremonial cutting of a Canada Day cake by Yukon Commissioner Adeline Webber. The event marked the official opening of the afternoon’s celebrations and welcomed visitors of all ages.
Throughout the day, the park buzzed with activity as families explored interactive games, children’s attractions and educational displays. Local firefighters hosted hands-on demonstrations for young visitors, while volunteers distributed cake, stickers and other festive treats. Food vendors offered a wide selection of local cuisine, and live music and stage performances kept crowds entertained well into the afternoon.
The celebration showcased Whitehorse’s strong sense of community, bringing together residents from diverse backgrounds to honour Canada’s history, culture and shared values. Organizers described the event as another successful Canada Day gathering that highlighted the city’s welcoming spirit and community pride.
