Iranians Mourn Khamenei Amid Uncertainty

Grief and Defiance Mark Khamenei Funeral

TEHRAN: Thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran to honor late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with emotions ranging from deep sorrow to growing fears that tensions with the United States and Israel could flare up again despite an existing ceasefire.

Wearing black and chanting slogans of unity, mourners filled the streets as Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin was carried through the capital during the final day of public funeral processions. Many participants said they remained unconvinced that peace would last, expressing concerns that another conflict could erupt.

The memorial events follow Khamenei’s death in US-Israeli strikes that began on Feb. 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Iran. His funeral was postponed for several months before a week-long state commemoration was organized across Iran and parts of Iraq.

Security was significantly tightened throughout the ceremonies, with members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps deployed across procession routes and vehicle access restricted. Despite soaring temperatures, thousands marched for kilometers carrying Iranian flags, red banners, and portraits of the late leader, reflecting a mix of national mourning, resilience, and uncertainty over the region’s future.
