Nations Pledge Open Malacca Strait

Indonesia Singapore Back Strait Security

JAKARTA: Indonesia and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the Strait of Malacca open, secure, and accessible, underscoring the waterway’s vital role in global trade and energy transportation.

The pledge was announced after talks between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the annual Leaders’ Retreat in Jakarta. Both leaders stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation while preventing piracy, pollution, and maritime accidents.

Indonesia also pledged to continue working with Malaysia and Thailand to ensure the strategic shipping route remains safe and open in accordance with international maritime law. Beyond maritime security, the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and cross-border electricity projects, signing several agreements to strengthen bilateral ties.

The renewed commitment comes amid heightened global concerns over shipping security following recent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the growing strategic importance of alternative maritime routes.
