Australia Strengthens Pacific Security

Australia Expands Pacific Alliance

SUVA: Australia and Fiji have signed a landmark defense agreement aimed at strengthening regional security and deepening strategic cooperation across the Pacific.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka formalized the Ocean of Peace Alliance, a mutual defense treaty that commits both nations to support each other during major security emergencies. The leaders also signed the Vuvale Union, designed to enhance cooperation in security, economic development, and people-to-people ties.

Australian officials said the new partnership will reinforce long-term stability and resilience across the Pacific and could later be expanded to include Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand.

The agreement follows Australia’s recent Nakamal Agreement with Vanuatu, which bars foreign military bases from being established in the island nation. China responded by urging regional countries to avoid turning security partnerships into geopolitical rivalries.
