Russia Expands Sahel Partnership

Lavrov Backs Sahel Cooperation

NIAMEY: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) during ministerial consultations in Niger, highlighting shared priorities in security, sovereignty, and regional integration.

Lavrov said Russia and the Sahel alliance share a common vision of a multipolar global order and oppose what he described as neocolonial practices. He stressed that stronger cooperation would support the sovereignty of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, while enhancing both bilateral and multilateral partnerships.

The Russian foreign minister also announced that the third Russia-Africa Summit will take place in Moscow in October, with discussions expected to focus on trade, investment, and broader economic cooperation. Invitations have been extended to the leaders of the three Sahel nations, along with government officials and business representatives.
