ANKARA: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said NATO emerged “stronger and more united” following the alliance’s summit in Ankara, emphasizing that member states remained united despite differences over defense spending and broader security issues.
Starmer said the summit achieved its primary goal of preserving alliance unity while reaffirming the importance of close cooperation between NATO allies. He also defended his working relationship with US President Donald Trump, describing strong UK-US ties as essential for defense, intelligence, and regional security.
A key focus of the summit was NATO’s proposal for members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, alongside discussions on continued support for Ukraine and evolving global security challenges. Starmer also called for renewed efforts to restore stability in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that prolonged regional tensions could have economic consequences beyond the region.
