Wildfires Intensify Across France as Extreme Heat Drives New Outbreaks
PARIS, July 10, 2026 — France is battling multiple wildfires as an ongoing heat wave continues to create dangerous conditions, with authorities warning that the elevated fire risk is expected to persist despite a brief improvement in weather forecast for the weekend.
Fresh blazes erupted on Friday in several regions, including Marseille, Loire-Atlantique, and the Lot department, prompting emergency responses as flames threatened residential areas. Officials closed affected roads and advised residents to stay away from fire zones while firefighters worked to contain the outbreaks.
Emergency crews reported progress on some of the country’s largest fires. In the Pyrenees-Orientales region, cooler temperatures and rising humidity helped firefighters gain control over a major wildfire near Trevillach, allowing evacuated residents to begin returning home. However, hundreds of firefighters remain deployed to prevent flare-ups.
Another significant wildfire in the Indre department of central France, which scorched approximately 900 hectares over several days, has also been brought under control. Authorities confirmed there were no reported injuries or damage to homes but cautioned that smoldering hotspots could reignite under changing weather conditions.
Julien Marion, France’s director general for civil security and crisis management, said the country may experience only a temporary reduction in wildfire danger over the weekend before hotter and drier conditions return. Since the beginning of the year, more than 25,000 hectares of land have burned in over 8,000 wildfire incidents—roughly double the area affected during the same period in 2025.
Officials attribute the worsening fire season to abundant vegetation following heavy rainfall earlier in the year, combined with successive heat waves that have created ideal conditions for rapidly spreading fires. France has also expanded its highest-level heat wave alert, with several western regions under red alert and additional areas expected to join in the coming days.
