The Sudanese army said Thursday that it had brought down an “enemy strategic drone” after the unmanned aircraft entered Sudan from the direction of Ethiopia.
According to a statement from the army’s General Command, the drone was intercepted in the morning near Sarkam in Blue Nile state, close to the Ethiopian border.
The military identified the aircraft as a strategic unmanned drone but did not disclose additional information about its origin, operator or mission.
Blue Nile state has strategic importance because of its location along Sudan’s border with Ethiopia and the continuing conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict between the army and RSF since April 2023. The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced around 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
