Harper Warns Against Alberta Separation

Former PM Opposes Alberta Separation

Former Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper has spoken out against the possibility of Alberta separating from Canada, warning that the move would carry significant risks and offer little benefit.

In a column published in the Calgary Herald, Harper said he does not support separation and argued that creating a new country would be extremely complicated. He also said the movement currently lacks the credible leadership needed to establish an independent state.

Albertans will vote on Oct. 19 on whether the province should remain part of Canada or whether the Alberta government should proceed with a second binding referendum on separation.

Harper has previously urged federal Liberals and Conservatives to work together as separatist sentiment has gained renewed momentum in Alberta and Quebec.

He also recently supported Ottawa’s decision to end trade negotiations with the United States, saying Canada should reduce its dependence on its southern neighbour to protect its sovereignty.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has likewise expressed support for keeping Canada united. During an appearance in Edmonton, Poilievre blamed the federal Liberal government for contributing to Alberta’s frustrations but maintained that leaving Canada would not solve the province’s concerns.
