Azerbaijan Says It Foiled Alleged IRGC Plot Targeting Key Infrastructure
ISTANBUL — Azerbaijan said it has prevented alleged “provocations and intelligence gathering” activities by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to reports from state media.
Counterintelligence operation stops suspected plot
The State Security Service of Azerbaijan said its officers uncovered the activities through extensive counterintelligence measures.
According to the state television channel AzTV, the suspected plan aimed to create public fear and damage Azerbaijan’s international reputation.
Authorities said one of the intended targets was the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, a major energy route that transports crude oil from the Caspian region to global markets.
Explosive devices discovered and neutralized
Security officials reported that they found three explosive devices within the country. Investigators quickly neutralized the explosives and prevented them from reaching other individuals.
Authorities said the swift action stopped potential attacks and reduced the risk of public panic.
Drone incident raises tensions
The report came shortly after Azerbaijan accused Iran of involvement in a drone incident targeting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an Azerbaijani exclave.
Officials said drones launched from Iranian territory struck the area, injuring four people and damaging the region’s international airport.
Following the incident, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the strike as a “terrorist act.” He called on Iran to provide an explanation, issue an apology, and hold those responsible accountable.
Iran denies involvement
Iranian authorities rejected the accusations. During a phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Tehran said no projectiles had been launched toward Azerbaijan.
Iran also stated that its armed forces have started an investigation into the incident.
