BRICS Shows Caution Amid US-Israel Attacks on Iran
ISTANBUL — The BRICS bloc has remained largely silent since the United States and Israel launched large-scale military operations in Iran, killing over 1,230 people in the first six days. Analysts say this marks a shift from the bloc’s historically outspoken positions.
Indian leadership shapes BRICS response
Under India’s chairmanship since December 2025, BRICS has not issued a formal statement on the conflict. Observers suggest India’s closer ties with the US and Israel may be influencing the bloc’s cautious approach, overriding the alliance’s usual stance.
Last year, when Israel and Iran engaged in a 12-day conflict, BRICS, then chaired by Brazil, promptly condemned the US-Israeli attacks as a “violation of international law.” Critics now argue that India’s priorities may be creating tensions with other members.
BRICS background and expansion
Formed in 2009 as an economic alliance, BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Since 2024, it expanded to include Indonesia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates.
While initially focused on economics, BRICS has broadened to include security issues, conducting joint military drills. India, however, opted out of the most recent exercises in South Africa in January 2026.
Current stance and implications
Despite hosting multiple member nations that oppose the US-Israel attacks, India-led BRICS has yet to publicly comment on Operation Epic Fury. Analysts argue the bloc’s silence highlights potential divisions between India’s foreign policy goals and the broader interests of other members, including Iran and Russia.
