Putin Reaffirms Russia’s Position on Middle East Tensions in Call With Iran
ISTANBUL — Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, reaffirmed his country’s stance on escalating tensions in the Middle East during a phone call with Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, on Friday.
Call emphasizes ceasefire and diplomacy
According to a Kremlin statement, Putin expressed condolences over the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his family members, and senior military officials. He stressed the urgent need to halt hostilities, abandon forceful measures, and return to political and diplomatic solutions in Iran and across the region.
The statement also noted that Putin maintains ongoing contact with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to address the situation.
Iran expresses gratitude for Russian support
During the call, Pezeshkian thanked Russia for its solidarity with the Iranian people in defending their sovereignty and independence. He also provided a detailed update on the regional situation.
Both leaders agreed to maintain communication through multiple channels to manage the escalating tensions.
Regional conflict continues
The call comes amid rising violence following large-scale attacks on Iran by United States and Israel on Saturday, which killed hundreds, including Iran’s supreme leader and top military officials.
In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries that host US military assets, escalating regional instability.
