Britain Targets Russian Oil and Military Networks

UK Launches Largest Sanctions Package on Russia

UK Unveils Largest Sanctions Package Against Russia

ISTANBUL – February 24, 2026

The United Kingdom has announced nearly 300 new sanctions against Russia, marking what officials describe as its largest sanctions package to date. The measures aim to cut off key sources of Russian revenue, particularly in the energy sector, and weaken military supply chains.

The Foreign Office confirmed that the government introduced the sanctions on the fourth anniversary of the war in Ukraine. According to the statement, this package represents the most extensive action taken by the UK since the early stages of the conflict.

Targeting Oil Exports and Energy Networks

Among the main targets is PJSC Transneft, one of the world’s largest pipeline operators. The company transports more than 80% of Russia’s oil exports. By sanctioning Transneft, the UK aims to limit Moscow’s ability to sell oil on international markets.

In addition, the UK imposed sanctions on 175 companies connected to the “2Rivers” oil group, which operates a large shadow fleet and trades Russian crude oil. Authorities believe these networks help Russia bypass existing restrictions.

Action Against Military Suppliers and Banks

Furthermore, the new measures target 49 entities and individuals, including suppliers of Russian drones, components, and military technology. The package also covers businesses involved in Russia’s liquefied natural gas sector.

At the same time, the UK added nine banks that process Russian cross-border payments to the sanctions list. Officials say this step will further disrupt financial channels that support Russia’s war effort.

Additional Support for Ukraine

Meanwhile, Yvette Cooper announced £30 million ($40.52 million) in new funding during her visit to Kyiv. The funds will strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience and support recovery efforts.

She stated that the UK has now provided a total of £21.8 billion in assistance since the war began. Cooper reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Ukraine, stressing that Ukraine’s security remains closely linked to European security.
