Family of Ottawa Tragedy Granted Canadian Residency

Canada Grants Permanent Residency to Family of Ottawa Mass Stabbing Victims

OTTAWA — Canada has granted permanent residency to the brother and father of an Ottawa man whose wife and four children were killed in a brutal mass stabbing in March 2024.

Tragic Attack in Ottawa
Darshani Ekanayake, 35, and her four children—seven-year-old Inuka, Ashwini, 4, Ranaya, 3, and two-month-old Kelly—were fatally attacked in their Ottawa townhouse. Gamini Amarakoon, a family friend and tenant, also died in the incident.

Survivor of the Attack
Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, Ekanayake’s husband and the father of the children, survived the attack but sustained injuries.

Permanent Residency for Family Members
Canadian authorities approved permanent residency status for Wickramasinghe’s father and brother, offering them legal protection and stability in the wake of the tragedy. The move ensures the family can remain in Canada while supporting Wickramasinghe during his recovery.
