Carney Weighs Role on U.S.-Led Gaza ‘Board of Peace’ Amid Putin Invitation
DAVOS, SWITZERLAND — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is still considering whether to join the newly proposed U.S.-led “Board of Peace” for Gaza’s reconstruction, even though Russian President Vladimir Putin may also participate.
Trump Announces Board for Gaza Reconstruction
Late last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the creation of the board. It aims to oversee a new technocratic Palestinian government, manage Hamas disarmament, and coordinate the deployment of an international security force in Palestine.
Canada Evaluates Participation
Carney received an invitation to join the board, alongside Putin, whose government continues its military invasion of Ukraine and faces significant Canadian economic sanctions.
Audrey Champoux, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said Monday, “There are still details that need to be worked out to formalize Canada’s next steps with the board.”
Canadian officials traveling with Carney to Davos added that the board’s charter document is “still under discussion” and that “many terms and conditions are still being worked out.”
