Canada Removes Daily Limit on Online Passport Renewal Applications
The Canadian government has removed the daily limit on online passport renewal applications, making the digital service more accessible for eligible citizens across the country.
Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced that Canadians who qualify for online passport renewals can now submit their applications at any time without waiting for a limited number of daily application slots. Previously, the system accepted a maximum of 2,000 online renewal applications each day.
The online renewal service is currently available to Canadians aged 16 and older whose passports have either expired or are due to expire within the next six months. Applicants must be physically present in Canada when applying and are required to upload a digital passport photograph taken by a commercial photographer, along with any necessary supporting documents.
Speaking in Vancouver, Diab said the government is continuing to modernise passport services and will closely monitor the expanded system. She also indicated that the programme could eventually be extended to include children under the age of 16 and Canadians living abroad.
Despite the expansion of online services, traditional application methods remain available. Canadians can continue renewing their passports in person at passport offices or by mail if they prefer.
The move is part of the federal government’s broader effort to improve passport services following significant delays experienced after pandemic-related travel restrictions were lifted. Officials say the upgraded online platform has undergone extensive testing and is fully prepared to handle the anticipated increase in applications.
By eliminating the application cap, the government aims to provide Canadians with a faster, more flexible and convenient passport renewal experience while continuing to strengthen the country’s digital public services.
