Canada’s Prime Minister Likely to Visit India in March for Key Trade Deals
Focus on Energy Uranium and Artificial Intelligence
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit India in the first week of March, where he may sign agreements covering uranium, energy, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence, India’s High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik said in an interview.
The planned visit reflects Canada’s broader effort to expand trade partnerships beyond the United States, its largest trading partner.
Canada Seeks to Diversify Global Alliances
Carney has stepped up efforts to reduce Canada’s reliance on the US market. Last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he drew widespread attention after declaring that the old rules-based global order had ended. He urged middle powers such as Canada to form new coalitions to build a fairer and more resilient global system.
Shortly after the speech, Canada reached an agreement with China to reduce tariffs on electric vehicles and canola, opening access to export markets worth C$7 billion ($5.11 billion). The government aims to double non-US exports over the next decade.
Resetting Ties with India
At the same time, Carney is working to rebuild relations with India following diplomatic tensions under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In 2023, Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader. India has strongly denied the allegations.
Since then, both countries have taken steps to improve engagement.
Growing Diplomatic Engagement
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 summit last year at Carney’s invitation. In addition, several senior Canadian ministers have visited India, signalling renewed political and economic cooperation between the two nations.
If confirmed, Carney’s visit could mark a significant step in strengthening Canada–India strategic and trade relations.
