Canada Calls for Respect of International Law After U.S. Capture of Venezuelan President

Ottawa emphasizes rule of law and citizen safety amid Venezuela crisis

Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand urged all nations to respect international law following the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Since closing its embassy in Venezuela in 2019, Canada has refused to recognize the Maduro government, opposing its repression of Venezuelans and persecution of political opponents, Anand said.

“Canada remains committed to democracy and the rule of law,” she stated. “We call on all parties to uphold international law and support the Venezuelan people’s right to live in peace and democracy.”

Anand added that Canada is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with international partners. She confirmed that Canadian consular officials in Bogota, Colombia, are prepared to assist Canadians affected by the situation.

The statement follows a “large-scale strike” conducted by the U.S., during which President Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of Venezuela. According to U.S. President Donald Trump, they are en route to New York City to face federal charges.
