Canadian Troops Safe After Missile Incident Near UN Base in Lebanon
No injuries reported as authorities assess damage at peacekeeping camp
ANKARA:
Canadian military personnel deployed in the Middle East remain safe after a missile interception near the Israel-Lebanon border, officials confirmed on Sunday.
According to the office of Defence Minister David McGuinty, authorities received reports of damage at Camp Naqoura, a key headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
All personnel accounted for
A spokesperson for the minister stated that all members of the Canadian Armed Forces assigned to Operation Jade are safe and accounted for. The confirmation reassured concerns about the safety of troops stationed in the area.
Deployment numbers may vary
Government data, last updated in 2024, indicated that four Canadian officers were serving as United Nations military observers. In addition, a senior Canadian Armed Forces officer had joined the mission upon request.
However, officials noted that troop numbers can change based on operational needs, and current figures may differ from earlier reports.
Peacekeeping mission continues in volatile region
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon includes more than 10,000 personnel. The mission works to maintain stability and prevent conflict in southern Lebanon, a region that often faces security tensions.
As investigations continue, authorities are assessing the extent of damage at the camp while monitoring the broader security situation.
