Chicago has seen a tragic surge in violence affecting minors, with over 100 children killed and hundreds more injured by gunfire. According to data from The Chicago Tribune, at least 174 children under 17 have lost their lives to shootings since September 2011, and 1,665 have been injured. The actual figures may be higher, as about 7.4% of cases lack age details.
In 2018 alone, 83 minors were shot and nine were killed, including a one-year-old girl. While shootings of children in 2011 and 2012 led to no fatalities, child deaths have steadily risen since 2013. In 2017, 38 children were killed by gunfire, with 246 minors overall injured by shootings.
Efforts to reduce violence in Chicago continue, though city officials and community members have struggled to find effective solutions. Representative Danny K. Davis (D-Ill.) voiced concern, saying the city’s residents are under immense pressure and divided on how best to address the crisis. Some attribute the violence to gang activity, while others point to police practices. Davis, who has lived in Chicago since 1961, said many have lost hope as children continue to fall victim to street violence.
