China Ends Visa Requirement for Canadian Tourists and Business Visitors
Visa-Free Travel to China for Canadians
China announced that it will remove visa requirements for Canadian tourists and business travelers for stays up to 30 days. The policy takes effect on Tuesday and will remain in place at least until the end of this year.
The move follows efforts by Mark Carney to strengthen relations with Beijing. During his recent visit, Carney said Chinese President Xi Jinping committed to visa-free access for Canadians, although China had not confirmed the agreement at the time.
Simplifying Travel and Boosting Tourism
Previously, Canadian visitors to mainland China faced a lengthy visa application process and fees of around $140. China has gradually eased visa requirements for other Western countries in recent years to encourage tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new policy signals a thaw in Canada-China relations following a period of diplomatic tension. In recent years, China maintained visa restrictions for Canadians and limited the number of Chinese tourism groups allowed to visit Canada.
Implications for Travelers
Canadian tourists and business visitors can now travel to China more easily, reducing both the cost and administrative burden. Officials say the measure is expected to boost tourism, business exchanges, and overall bilateral relations between the two countries.
