Corus and Appear Upgrade Canada News Network

Corus Implements Nationwide IP-First Broadcast System

Appear and Corus Modernize Canada’s National News Network

Canada, 10 April 2026 – Appear and Corus Entertainment Inc. have announced a nationwide upgrade to Corus’ news contribution system. The company is replacing leased circuits with an IP-based architecture that uses SRT as the main transport protocol across affiliates, news bureaus, and operational hubs.

“Shifting away from leased circuits and bringing more capability in-house was a key part of our strategy,” said Drew Kikauka, Senior Director of Enterprise Architecture and Broadcast Engineering at Corus Entertainment. “Appear gives us greater control, improves efficiency, and enables a consistent, scalable IP-first contribution model across Canada.”

Corus employs Appear’s X Platform for media processing and gateway functions throughout the network. The deployment continues to support legacy interfaces, such as ASI, at important headend locations. This hybrid model allows facilities to transition at different speeds. Daily operations are managed through an orchestration layer built on Skyline DataMiner, while Toronto-based partner Rocket provides custom UI and application tools for scheduling and operator control. The architecture also supports ground-to-cloud contribution workflows.

“Corus has made a strategic move that many broadcasters are prioritizing, replacing leased circuits with a resilient IP-first system,” said Ed McGivern, President and General Manager of Appear US. “By consolidating functions and standardizing operations nationwide, this streamlined model delivers both reliability and efficiency without increasing operational complexity.
