Delcy Rodríguez has strongly rejected remarks by Donald Trump suggesting that Venezuela could become the 51st state of the United States, reaffirming the country’s commitment to sovereignty and independence.
Speaking outside the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Monday, Rodriguez said Venezuela would continue protecting its territorial integrity and national identity. Her comments came after Trump stated in a Fox News interview that he was “seriously considering” the idea of incorporating the South American nation into the US.
Rodriguez made the remarks while attending final hearings in the long-running territorial dispute between Venezuela and neighboring Guyana over the oil-rich Essequibo region.
She praised Venezuela’s independence movement and honored historical figures who fought to free the country from colonial rule, stressing that Venezuela would remain an independent nation rather than become subject to foreign control.
The diplomatic exchange follows heightened tensions between Caracas and Washington after former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured earlier this year and taken to the United States. Despite the political strain, Trump has recently claimed that relations between the two countries have improved.
