EPA and Local Farm Deliver Fresh Produce to Scott AFB Families

Supporting Service Members

On Sept. 8, 2025, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin joined forces with Frey Farms to deliver more than 20 pallets of produce to Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The effort was part of the EPA’s Feed It Onward program, which partners with farmers to cut food waste and share surplus harvests with military families.

Airmen and their loved ones received watermelons, corn, pumpkins, and fresh watermelon juice as part of the community event.

Tribute to Military Service

Zeldin, a retired Army officer, began by honoring service members, retirees, and their families. He reflected on the sacrifices made by military personnel who often miss holidays, anniversaries, and milestones.

“Everything we value about life in America is possible because of the men and women who defend our freedom,” Zeldin said. “It is an honor to thank you for your service.”

Reducing Food Waste

The administrator also highlighted the scale of food waste nationwide. He cited an EPA study estimating that the average American household loses about $728 each year due to wasted food.

The Feed It Onward program, part of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration, aims to keep edible food out of landfills by redirecting it to communities in need. Zeldin encouraged farms across the country to take part, saying, “We can all be ambassadors for solutions to this challenge.”

Farm’s Perspective

Sarah Frey, CEO of Frey Farms and the nation’s top pumpkin producer, described why the issue matters to her. Starting with a small truck route at age 16, she has built a multi-state farming business supplying major retailers.

Frey explained that much of the waste comes from retailers rejecting produce over size or appearance rather than quality. “This food is healthy and delicious,” she said. “It hurts to see it wasted. Through Feed It Onward, we can connect farms with military bases and ensure fresh food reaches families who serve.”

Community Partnership

Col. Matt Collins, commander of the 375th Air Mobility Wing, thanked the EPA, Frey Farms, and local partners for their support. “This effort reflects the strong bond our installation shares with the community and the care shown to our service members and their families,” he said.

Air Force 1st Lt. Colton Stanislawski noted the high demand. “It took just 15 minutes for nearly everything to be gone,” he said. “This is the perfect way to make sure good produce never goes to waste.”
