EU Leaders Hold Emergency Meeting on Ukraine Funding
Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz will meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever on Friday for urgent talks in Brussels. The meeting aims to rescue the EU’s critical funding package for Ukraine, which is facing growing financial pressure.
Private Working Dinner in Brussels
A spokesperson for the German government confirmed that the three leaders will hold a private dinner to discuss the stalled plan. Belgium continues to strongly resist the proposal, which calls for the first-ever use of frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv. Its refusal now threatens the entire strategy.
Growing Pressure as Ukraine Runs Out of Time
Russia has intensified its attacks, while Washington is pushing for a peace arrangement that analysts say benefits Moscow. At the same time, Ukraine’s government is rapidly running out of money. Europe also risks losing influence in ongoing US-led diplomatic discussions.
Credibility at Stake
The EU must reach an agreement quickly. Failure to approve the funding plan would weaken the bloc at a crucial moment and damage its credibility as a reliable partner for Ukraine.
