EU Faces Rising Pressure as Housing Crisis Deepens
Housing affordability has become one of the most urgent issues across the European Union. In response, the EU has named its first Commissioner for Housing, Dan Jørgensen, raising expectations about whether this new role can ease the situation.
Young Adults Struggle to Move Out
Living with parents offers clear financial advantages: no rent, shared meals and reduced expenses. These benefits feel normal for teenagers. However, for many adults in their 30s, staying with family is no longer a choice but a financial necessity.
Recent figures show the average European moves out at 26.2 years old. Yet the reality varies widely. In Finland, most young adults gain independence by 21. In contrast, many in Croatia, Spain, Greece, Italy and Slovakia remain in their childhood bedrooms well beyond the age of 30 as housing costs continue to rise.
Rents Surge Across Major European Cities
Across the continent, housing prices have jumped at alarming rates between 2020 and 2025. Rents increased by 81 percent in Lisbon and 73 percent in Prague. Even traditionally affordable cities, such as Warsaw, are no longer within reach for many residents. For thousands, the increase feels like paying a second rent on top of their original monthly cost.
Political Consequences Grow
Researchers warn that the housing crisis is not just an economic problem. A study by Oxford University’s Progressive Politics Research Network indicates that worsening affordability is weakening support for mainstream centre-left parties and fuelling dissatisfaction with traditional political systems.
EU Intervention Remains Limited
Housing policy remains largely under national control, and the EU has no direct authority to regulate it. However, rising public frustration pushed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to appoint Jørgensen to help coordinate responses. Despite this step, many doubt the EU’s ability to deliver rapid results, especially as rent prices continue to climb faster than policy changes.
