New York Times Sues Pentagon Over Media Access Rules
Lawsuit Challenges Pentagon Policy
The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon to overturn new rules that restrict media access. The newspaper argues that the regulations, imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, violate the First Amendment and due process protections of the US Constitution.
Concerns Over Press Freedom
According to the Times, the rules give Hegseth broad authority to decide which reporters can be banned from Pentagon facilities. Several news outlets, including the Times, have left offices inside the Pentagon instead of accepting the new restrictions, leaving a press corps seen as largely favorable to the Trump administration.
Official Statements
“The policy is an attempt to exert control over reporting the government dislikes,” said Charles Stadtlander, a spokesperson for the Times. The Pentagon has not yet issued a response to the lawsuit, which was filed in the US District Court in Washington, DC.
