Major Fire Breaks Out on Cargo Vessel at Poland’s Gdansk Port
A large fire erupted aboard a cargo ship carrying scrap metal at the Port of Gdansk in northern Poland on Thursday evening, triggering an extensive emergency response.
According to local reports, authorities dispatched 17 firefighting units after flames were detected inside the vessel’s cargo hold, which was heavily loaded with scrap metal.
Fire crews have been working from several positions, including the ship’s deck and nearby waterways, while heavy machinery is being used to remove burning scrap from the cargo hold to help contain the blaze.
Emergency officials said firefighting efforts have been complicated by the depth of the cargo hold and the tightly packed scrap metal, making it difficult to reach the source of the fire.
Senior State Fire Service official Radosław Gburzynski said the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have originated from oily scrap metal or other combustible materials stored inside the cargo.
No injuries have been reported, and authorities confirmed that emergency crews remained at the scene as operations continued to fully extinguish the fire and establish its cause.
Officials are expected to conduct a detailed investigation once the blaze is brought under control.
